On the Music of John Cage:
Writings by James Pritchett
I am a writer on music, particularly John Cage and the late-twentieth-century American avant-garde. I am the author of a book on Cage and numerous essays and articles on Cage, Morton Feldman, and other composers.
This website includes almost all of my writings that have appeared since the book was released in 1993. It includes all of my recent work on the music of Morton Feldman and my latest thinking about 4′ 33″ and all of Cage’s silent pieces.
Many of the essays here began as posts on my blog “The piano in my life.” The blog also includes less formal writings about my life in music.
The book

My book The Music of John Cage is the only critical survey of all of Cage’s works. It is published by Cambridge University Press and is available in paperback from your favorite bookstore.
You can read the full text of the book’s Introduction on this website.
